How to Calm Redness and Rosacea

If your cheeks flush at the drop of a hat, your skin feels hot or stings easily, or you have persistent redness and those little visible veins, you are dealing with reactive skin, and possibly rosacea. It is incredibly common, especially in our 40s and 50s, and while it needs a gentle hand, there is a lot we can do to calm it down.

What is going on with redness and rosacea

Redness usually comes down to a skin barrier that has become weakened and reactive, blood vessels that are quick to dilate, and inflammation bubbling under the surface. Rosacea is a longer term version of this, often with flushing, visible vessels and sometimes little bumps. The golden rule with all of it is the same: calm and protect, never attack.

What tends to trigger it

Everyone is different, but the usual suspects are heat, spicy food, alcohol, stress, harsh products and sudden changes in temperature. It is worth noticing what sets yours off, because avoiding your own triggers is half the battle.

How to calm it

Gentle and consistent is everything here. A few things I lean on with my reactive and rosacea prone clients:

  • Soothing antioxidants to calm redness and inflammation. My Hyaluronic Flavonoids is made for exactly this, redness, rosacea and couperose.
  • Barrier repair, because a stronger barrier reacts less. A comforting Ceramide Moisturiser and the microbiome supporting Probiotix Cream both help settle things.
  • Calming rescue for angry flare ups. Cica Post Care is my go to for soothing irritated skin quickly.
  • Gentle daily SPF, since sun is one of the biggest rosacea triggers of all. Meso Shield 50 every morning.

What to avoid

Ease off the strong stuff. Harsh scrubs, high strength acids, strong retinols and anything that leaves your skin tingling are usually best paused when you are prone to redness. Heavily fragranced products can be a trigger too. Simple and soothing always wins.

Where to start

Everything I trust for calmer, less reactive skin is gathered in my Sensitive, Red and Reactive edit. And if your redness is persistent or you think it might be rosacea, book a skin consultation. Rosacea is very manageable with the right approach, and I can look at yours properly and build a calming plan around it.
