How to Fade Sun Spots and Summer Pigmentation

If you have come out of summer with a scatter of new brown spots or patches that were not there in spring, you are in very good company. Pigmentation is one of the most common things my clients come to me about, especially once the sunny weather fades, and it is absolutely something we can improve. Here is how I help my clients fade it and, just as importantly, keep it from creeping back.

Why pigmentation flares after summer

Pigmentation happens when the cells that give your skin its colour go into overdrive, usually triggered by sun exposure, but also by hormones and inflammation. Sun is the big one. A summer of it, even on cloudy days, ramps up that pigment production, and the spots often only surface properly once the tan fades. That is why so many people notice their pigmentation most in late summer and autumn.

The ingredients that actually help

Fading pigmentation is a patience game, but the right actives genuinely work. I look for ingredients that calm that pigment overdrive and gently speed up renewal so darker cells clear more quickly. My go to treatment is Mela Drops, made specifically for dark spots and uneven tone. Vitamin C is a lovely daily brightener too, and a gentle glycolic or exfoliating step helps fresh, even skin come through.

The step you cannot skip

Here is the honest truth about pigmentation: none of the above works if you are not wearing SPF every single day. Sun is what caused it, and even a little daily exposure will undo your progress and bring the spots straight back. A high, wearable SPF like Meso Shield 50 is non negotiable, rain or shine, all year round. It is the single most important part of any pigmentation plan.

A simple routine

Keep it consistent: cleanse, apply your pigmentation treatment, moisturise, and finish every morning with SPF. If you would rather not piece it together, my Pigmentation Routine brings the cleanse, treat, brighten and protect steps together in the right order.

Where to start

Everything I trust for pigmentation is gathered in my Pigmentation and Uneven Tone edit. And if your pigmentation is stubborn or you are not sure what type it is, book a skin consultation. Some pigmentation, like melasma, needs a slightly different approach, and I can look at yours properly and build the right plan around it.
