If your skin feels rough to the touch, looks a little uneven, or your pores seem more obvious than they used to, you are far from alone. Texture and pores are two of the most common things clients ask me to help with, and while you cannot change the pores you were born with, you can absolutely make skin look smoother, clearer and more refined. Here is how.
Why texture and pores show up
Rough, bumpy texture is usually a build up of dead skin cells sitting on the surface, sometimes mixed with a little congestion. Pores look larger when they are clogged with oil and debris, and they naturally become more noticeable as we get older, because the collagen that keeps them tight and springy starts to fade. Sun damage speeds all of that up. So the job is simple: gently clear the surface, keep pores clear, and look after your collagen.
What actually helps
A few things genuinely make a difference here, used gently and consistently:
- Gentle exfoliation to lift away the dead cells that make skin feel rough. My Hyaluronic PHA does this kindly enough for sensitive skin, and a PHA Activator gives a deeper refresh when your skin can take it.
- Niacinamide to refine the look of pores and even out tone. My Hyaluronic Niacin is my go to.
- Retinol to smooth texture and support collagen over time, introduced slowly. Retinol 1.0 is where I usually start clients.
- Daily SPF, because protecting your collagen keeps pores looking tighter and skin smoother. Meso Shield 50 every morning.
A simple routine
Keep it gentle, this is not about scrubbing. Cleanse, use your exfoliating or niacinamide serum a few times a week, moisturise, and finish every morning with SPF. Bring retinol in at night, a couple of times a week to start. Give it time, texture improves steadily rather than overnight.
One honest word of warning
It is tempting to attack rough skin with harsh scrubs and strong acids every single day, but that usually backfires, irritating the skin and making texture worse. Gentle and regular always wins.
Where to start
Everything I trust for smoother, more refined skin is gathered in my Texture, Pores and Bumps edit. And if your texture is stubborn or you are not sure what is causing it, book a skin consultation and I will take a proper look and build the right plan around your skin.
